What exactly is a coach? A coach is a leader, motivator, teacher and so much more. Many coaches have a lot of character qualities in common because it takes a certain type of person to be a successful coach. There are many qualities that make up a good coach — but what are some important qualities for a successful coach?

coach qualitiesLeadership — This one might be a little too obvious. But, leadership is one of the most important qualities of a successful coach. You must be the leader that keeps everything organized and running smoothly. A successful coach needs to be the expert that everyone looks up to — not only athletes, but assistant coaches and parents as well.

The ability to teach — This quality is also extremely important. Knowing every aspect of your sport isn’t enough — you must be able to teach it well.

Willingness to learn — While you may be an expert, you must always be willing to learn and grow. If you think you know everything, we can assure you that you don’t. Never stop being willing to learn.

Patience — A successful coach must have patience to handle a stressful season, different attitudes and progression of athletes.

Attention to detail — This may be one of the qualities that isn’t as obvious as the ones listed above, but it is very important for success. A coach who doesn’t pay attention to details, such as noticing a small error in footwork or holding the bat too high or too low, won’t always notice what to fix. Paying attention to the smallest of details can help your athlete improve tremendously.

Adaptable — A successful coach must be adaptable. They need to be able to adjust to all types of new conditions — whether it’s new athletes each season, new attitudes to coach, new scenarios or whatever it may be. A coach must be able to adapt to new personalities and be able to work with a variety of athletes.
