Spring training is upon us and here in the Greater Phoenix area, we are feeling it! In case you didn’t know, Arizona is home to the Cactus league, bringing 15 MLB teams to the area and according to the numbers from 2017, over 1.5 million spectators.
Here at Edufii we are lucky enough to have ambassadors in all sports, and baseball is no exception. From pitching and hitting coaches, to current and former MLB players to program design and strength coaches, Edufii has built a platform to accommodate all. We talked to two contributors who are no strangers to the MLB scene.
Erik Cordier is a former pitcher for the Kansas City Royals, San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins. Erik has 14 years of professional pitching experience and is now using that experience to coach others at the Impact Sports Academy in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Katherine Roberts of Human Performance for Sports has been assessing players, creating programs and teaching yoga and pilates to players for over 15 years. Working with teams such as the 2016 World Series Champs the Chicago Cubs, Oakland A’s, LA Dodgers, Texas Rangers and Milwaukee Brewers, she has certainly gained her credibility through hands-on experience.
When it comes to Spring Training, there is a lot of focus on building momentum into the season, honing individual skills, staying healthy and creating a program that each athlete can stick with consistently. As Katherine mentions every athlete has their own individual items to improve on, whether it’s a specific skill or a certain injury they are working on, and with that, they each have their own team of coaches. “It’s the best way to communicate and manage the information in one spot. It’s so easy to use” said Katherine. With Edufii, all coaches are able to communicate and understand what each player is working on. From recovery drills to enhancing their mechanics, all coaches can remain on the same page on one platform.
Having played in the Major Leagues and now being involved in the coaching side of things, Erik understands the importance of building up young athletes and creating that coach-athlete relationship. Everyone tends to learn differently, and this is especially important to understand when coaching and molding young athletes. With Edufii, Erik is able to adapt as a coach to each player’s needs. “Edufii has helped me communicate with kids outside of the academy. They are focusing on baseball outside of practice which is outstanding” said Erik. By being able to load in videos, articles, documents, and photos, he is able to ensure that his young rising stars are always connected and are always learning.
One consistent take away it seems from coaches, players and specialists is that Spring Training can create some wear and tear on players. With all the travel and the back to back games, it’s important to stay on top of your health and well being. Erik harps on proper rest and recovery while Katherine takes a more preemptive approach proper assessment and prescription, all of which are important for these professional athletes to remain healthy and thrive.
One thing is for certain, all coaches and athletes can benefit from using Edufii. For creating better communication amongst the team, staff, and players, to ensuring all athletes are coaches are on the same page with their individual program. If you haven’t already you can download Edufii for iOS and Android, we will see you on the field!
